An official related to this told the news agency PTI that the Digital Communication Commission (DCC) is to meet next week. The final decision will be taken on the price of spectrum in the meeting of the apex decision making body in the Department of Telecommunications. It is anticipated that the committee will proceed with the auction process only on the basis of the recommendations made by TRAI on the base price of spectrum.

“The auction of spectrum and price of spectrum are going to be the most important topics in the meeting to be held in the third week of this month,” the official said.

The official said that it is possible that no one will show interest in buying a particular band, but the department does not feel that there will be any demand for any band. He was confident that the auction process would be completed by December 31, 2019.

This is the reason that the Department of Telecommunications is making all possible efforts to auction the spectrum till December this year despite all the busy schedule.

DCC can proceed only on the recommendation of base price made by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for different spectrum bands. The department feels that the demand for various bands will come despite the industry expressing concern about the prices of radioweb. The industry has, on several occasions, overstated the recommended base price of TRAI and cautioned that no one would want to buy RadioWeb at such high prices.

Telecom regulator TRAI decided in July this year to maintain its recommendations regarding valuation of spectrum and base price. This was a setback to the hopes of companies like Bharti Airtel, which were facing financial pressure, as they were seeking a reduction in the base price. TRAI had told the telecom department that it had fixed the base price keeping in mind all the relevant aspects.
